Monday was the sixteenth anniversary of the attacks on America by foreign
terrorists. As we reflect on the life changing events of that day what
thoughts come to mind? For me it was the return, however short, to God and
the seeking of His guidance in the days that followed. Greetings in the name
of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
There is a basic truth of mankind revealed in our response to the events
of 9/11/01. That is when the circumstances of life exceed our ability to
deal with them we call on God to help us out. There is a saying that goes,
ďThere are no atheists in foxholes.Ē When we fear for our very lives we call
upon the creator of life to have mercy on us. God Bless America.
I guess my question would be, ďWhy?Ē We live our lives apart from God,
yet we seek him out when we canít handle the consequences. We want the
benefits of His Protection but donít necessarily want to follow his
guidance. I am reminded of growing up and the rule was if you are under my
roof youíll follow my rules. If we choose to honor God and follow his
direction we would enjoy His blessing.
Have we honored God in our actions as a nation? I donít think so. We
continue to move away from the instructions God laid out for us in
Scripture. We continue to think we know better how to live life than the
creator of life Himself. Here is Godís answer to that;
Romans 1:21-24; nlt,
Yes, they knew God, but they wouldnít worship him as God or even give him
And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like.
As a result, their minds became dark and confused.
Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God,
they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and
So God abandoned them to do whatever
shameful things their hearts desired.
Think of it this way, a rookie driver is having difficulty getting a
handle on the setup. He approaches a few of the more experienced drivers and
they recommend he talk to the reigning track champion for guidance. The
rookie asks and receives guidance and direction. He considers it and then
tosses it out and decides he knows better what to do. Sounds pretty foolish
doesnít it? It is, but that is the way we behave toward God.
We seek His guidance and direction but we do not follow it, we only
consider it as an option. We should hold a higher view of Godís word. God
knows what it takes to live the best life possible. God took the time to
write it down for us. He gave us all the instruction we need to live a
fruitful and satisfying life. We need to learn and follow His Word.
Have you ever tried to help one of your children avoid some of the
pitfalls you fell into when you were growing up? That is what we do as
parents; we try to give our children something better than we had. We try to
make their life better than ours. So why is it so difficult for us to learn?
Jesus brought twelve men together and taught them the way God wants us to
live. He taught them the lessons they needed to teach others. Matthewís
Gospel records the first time Jesus started His teaching. Jesus started with
the character traits of those who honor God.
Matthew 5:1-12, One day as the crowds
were gathering, Jesus went up the mountainside with his disciples and sat
down to teach them. This is what he taught them:
"God blesses those who realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them.
God blesses those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
God blesses those who are gentle and lowly,
for the whole earth will belong to them.
God blesses those who are hungry and thirsty for justice,
for they will receive it in full.
God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
God blesses those whose hearts are pure,
for they will see God.
God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God.
God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
"God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because
you are my followers.
Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven.
And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted, too.Ē
Godís blessing is the result of living
our life according to Godís instruction. It isnít a reward. It is what
happens when we reflect the character of God. When we are humble, gentle,
merciful, peaceful, pure of heart and motive, the results will be good. Good
only leads to good results, good cannot lead to evil. We experience the
blessings of God when we act like Him.
The same is true for our country, when we act in a way that honors God we
will be blessed. When we ignore or reject Godís guidance we will not be
blessed. When we ask for Godís blessing we need to remember that we need to
follow His guidance and direction. When we do we will be blessed. My hope is
that we as individuals and our nation as a whole will receive Godís
blessing. For that to happen though we will need to change a few things.
Letís start in our own lives, read that passage of Scripture, go back and
read the lessons I wrote in past columns as we explored this passage in
depth and try to live in a way that will honor God. Then we will see Godís
blessing work throughout the world we live in.
