JASON MYERS
WANTS TO BEAT EVERYBODY AT NORTH-SOUTH SHOOTOUT
Southern Modified Driver Still Seeking First Shootout
Victory |
There
might not be a driver that is more excited for the
return of the North-South Shootout to North
Carolina's Concord Speedway on Saturday, November 7
than Jason Myers.
When asked what makes Concord so much fun from a
driver's perspective, Myers could barely contain his
enthusiasm.
"Have you been there? Seriously? Oh my God that
place is sick!" exclaimed the North Carolina NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series champion. "That's one of
the most fun race tracks that I've ever driven in a
Modified. That dogleg in the backstretch and you're
wide open, it feels like you're going faster there
than anywhere else. It feels like you're riding a
rollercoaster. It takes your stomach every lap
coming through there. If you love driving race cars
then Concord has to be your favorite track."
Myers will pound the ground in his Modified at
Concord on Friday and Saturday this week when the
13th Annual John Blewett III North-South Shootout
weekend kicks off for the Dunleavy's Truck and
Trailer Repair Tour-Type Modifieds.
The Walnut Cove, North Carolina driver had a career
year that saw him score seven wins at the famous
Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. But Myers has
never won the North-South Shootout. His best finish
came at Caraway Speedway in last year's installment
of the race when he finished fourth.
"I could win every race I ran all year long and it
would still be cool to win the North-South
Shootout," he said. "It's the North-South Shootout,
man. I hate to say it because everyone knows it but
it lost some hype when it went to Caraway. It became
another race. Now that it's back at Concord it's
back to what it used to be as far as meaning
something."
Myers and his older brother, Burt, both have a
reputation for doing anything to score a win at
Bowman Gray. But how far is he willing to go at
Concord to get that first Shootout win?
"It depends on the situation," he said. "Yeah, I'll
do what it takes to win, but you don't want to tear
a man's race car up. You don't want to spin a guy
out because if you do that at Concord he's going to
get wrecked and it's going to be bad. I'm all for
winning, but I don't like tearing people's race cars
up.
"But if I'm running second and I'm a lot faster and
he's making it impossible for me to pass him, then
yes, I'm going to get around him. But Concord is one
of those tracks where you have to give or take or
you'll end up with your stuff on a rollback."
With this being the North-South Shootout, there's
always a strong contingency of northern drivers that
come down to win this race. Drivers such as Doug
Coby, Matt Hirschman and Ted Christopher will all be
coming down south to win this race. Myers
acknowledged that there are some bragging rights on
the line, but not so much for the reasons one would
expect.
"There's a ton, but really if you win the
North-South Shootout, yeah you beat those guys too
but you beat (George) Brunnhoelzl, and you beat Burt
Myers," explained Myers. "It doesn't mean anymore to
beat a Doug Coby than it does to beat someone like
that. You know those guys are just as good as the
guys up north."
Myers also added that he doesn't feel like Concord
has to be "defended" from the Northerners either.
"It's not really our turf," he said. "Concord is not
a race track that we run on a regular basis. It is
down here, but I wouldn't consider it really our
turf. It's just fair game at Concord. That track
would be anywhere and it would be the same.
"But it is fun to bring the regional thing into it.
North versus South. Hell yeah bring them on. Bring
the southern guys too. I want to beat everybody."
