BOHN SPINS & WINS AT BOWMAN GRAY
Wild Final Lap Caps NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Victory
Danny Bohn got his second career NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour victory, but it wasn't without drama.

Bohn managed to keep his Modified rolling in the right direction following a last-lap incident and drove the No. 65 Rustoleum/Cedar Peaks Enterprises/Ray Evernham Enterprises Chevrolet under the yellow-checkered flag to claim the Strutmasters.com 199 at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Bohn, who had the fastest car in practice and won the Coors Light Pole Award earlier in the day, dominated the race. He led 196 of the 199 laps on the flat quarter-mile.

“It was interesting (the race) as I had a really good car and didn’t really have to get on it that hard,” Bohn said. “We pulled away to a half-a-lap lead over second place (Kyle Ebersole) and then we caught the lapped cars. From then on I really don’t know what the deal was with them.”

There was contact between cars of rookie Joe Ryan Osborne and Gary Putnam as both were on the tail end of the lead lap after the white flag came out and Ryan collected the 26-year-old Freehold, New Jersey, driver. Bohn went around after the contact, but got the car righted immediately as the caution flag ended the race.

“I know those cars want to stay on the lead lap but it wasn’t their night and I would give them enough respect to pull over and get out of the way of the leaders,” Bohn added. “The No. 15 (Osborne) went out through the grass and took me out and luckily I was able to keep going.”

Bohn's previous career win came in 2012 at Caraway Speedway during his rookie year.

In the melee, Cole Powell took second and Luke Fleming third. Championship points leader Andy Seuss and rookie Spencer Davis rounded out the top five.

It was the best career finish for Powell and his runner-up finish gave him his third consecutive top-three finish in as many races at the historic track and added he didn’t really see what triggered the last-lap incident.

“I didn’t see any of the initial action that caused the incident I just saw cars wrecking,” Powell said. “I don’t know if we had anything for him (Bohn) but would we had a good car,” Powell added. “We got the short tracks down with this modified, but we have to work on our car on the bigger tracks.”

For Fleming it was his best finish on the Tour since he scored his lone win in surprising fashion at Bowman Gray in 2009 driving his dad’s (Chris Fleming) car in a last minute start.

“Anytime you put yourself in position to win here at this track you can be in position to win,” Fleming added. “I am just so proud of the crew and everyone on the team for giving me a good car. I was saving my tires the first 100 laps and then I got on it pretty hard the last 100 (laps). It was a good night for us.”

Ebersole, who was trying to overtake Bohn in the closing laps, wound up getting knocked back to sixth. Gary Putnam, Joe Ryan Osborne, AJ Winstead and Burt Myers completed the top 10. For Myers the top-10 finish was almost as good as a win as his primary car suffered motor problems before practice started and he had to borrow a car to make the start of the race from the rear of the field.

Andy Seuss pushed his points lead to 23 over defending tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III, who finished 16th after dropping out of the race on lap 91 with motor problems. It was his first finish outside the top-10 since this same race one year ago at Bowman Gray Stadium.

JR Bertuccio sits third in points, 36 behind Seuss and two ahead of Bohn with Fleming completing the top five in the standings.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will race next on Wednesday, Aug. 20 in the Bush's Beans 150 at Bristol Motor Speedway in the annual combination race with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
