TRAVELING AROUND
by Rev. Don Rivers

   Have you ever been so busy that you forget to take care of yourself? I think I forgot to pay attention to something somewhere. Maybe you have had the same difficulty. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

   It seems I am on the road more in the “off-season” than during race season. Lynda and I have been traveling on and off since Thanksgiving. I think we have only had a few weekends at home. Well somewhere along the road I caught something and find myself struggling. My wife Lynda thought it might be good to share some of her thoughts over the past few weeks. I am thankful for her being alongside me in our journeys.

   Don and I recently returned from a trip to Haiti . This trip was one that if you had asked me a year ago I didn't think it would ever happen. But never say never...right? I have found as I get older that so much happens in life that you are quite positive will never be possible.

   When I first went to Haiti I came back hoping that I could someday share what I saw and felt there with Don but when I mentioned how much I wanted him to go there with me, I could tell by the look and sound in his voice that going to Haiti was not on his list of the many things that God has for him to do.

   Why do we file things away as impossible? The family member who struggles with addiction, the job that we have that weighs us down everyday, the state of things in our country that aggravate us? If we look around and get out of our despair we will see that change is always possible and inevitable.

   The Good Book reminds us....

“for nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

   We read and hear that but do we really believe it? Our human nature leads us to believe in impossibility all day long. But if I look back at all the things I thought were impossible I laugh at my lack of belief! Such a lack of faith in God!

   Not only did Don and I travel together to Haiti but Don is now an enthusiastic ambassador for Haiti . We are already planning our next trip! Some might think, “how can he find time for Haiti with all the work to do with the racing ministry and being the pastor of a church”? It all goes back to nothing being impossible; when you are in God's Will and following his lead he makes the way straight and possible.

Isaiah 40:3-5; A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD;
make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.

And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

   I have been with Don when he has wondered how he could cover all the things that needed to be taken care of. Should he head down south for a racing weekend or stay and be at the Sunday morning church service? We are always amazed time after time how when we honor God's lead he honors our time.

   When Don made the decision to go to Haiti it was an uncertain decision for sure. He had no idea what it would be like even to the point of wondering “how am I going to like eating goat?” To his surprise he actually liked goat and came home weighing the same as when he left the USA ! I think that disappointed him a little; he thought he would come home a little lighter! LOL!

   As I write this today we are remembering as a country the life of a man who had the courage to speak of changing things that seemed impossible but he saw great possibility. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream and he shared it so that even today many of us remember his thoughts of possibility. He said,

   “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

   What are we hoping for? Are we hoping for the impossible? Do we dare hope for anything? Infinite hope is really all we have.

   Everyone who heads to a race with their team has the hope of a win, right? I have to confess that when I go to the track with Don early on race day and watch everyone prepare to race I am amazed at the hope I see. Great time and effort is put into the hope of a win even though everyone knows there can only be one winner.

   Wouldn't it be great to channel that time and effort into everything that we do with the hope of winning? Even if the win doesn't come right away, realizing that nothing is impossible is the fuel that keeps us trying. What if we our faith in God and watch as He fulfills our hope?

Hebrews 11:1; Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

   I can't say that I always think the impossible is possible. What I can say is that a true miracle happened when Don and I stepped foot in Haiti together and he saw what I did; possibility in a land where only hope for change will bring about the impossible.

   I encourage you not to lose faith in what you hope for. If your faith and hope is in the Lord our God, all obstacles will be removed and the impossible will become possible.
