COBY KEEPS ROLLING WITH WATERFORD WIN
Third Whelen Modified Victory In Five Races

Doug Coby continued to roll in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action Saturday when he captured the checkered flag in front of a capacity crowd in the Mr. Rooter 161 at Waterford Speedbowl.

Coby, from Milford, Conn., led 119 laps in the No. 52 Reynolds Auto Wrecking/Furnace & Duct Supply Chevrolet Saturday en route to his third victory in five races to start the 2012 season. It is his fifth career victory overall, and first in eight Whelen Modified Tour starts at Waterford.

“I’ve been trying to win at this track in a [Whelen Modified] Tour car for a long time, my first career win should have come here back in 2004 – that was one that got away,” Coby said.

While he led the vast majority of the race – 119 of 163 laps – Coby needed to hold off Ryan Preece on a green-white-checker restart for the victory. Entering turn one on that restart, Coby made the decisive move to secure the victory.

“Knock the 16 [Preece] in the door, and hang on for a few laps,” Coby said of his move. “The outside was the place to be on the restarts, he was getting great runs. I knew I had to take away the entry for him and kind of stay on the bottom up off and change his entry for him and kind of change his line a little bit.”

Justin Bonsignore crossed the line second while Preece settled for in third.

“It was interesting, it got a little tight there,” Preece said of the race finish. “I know we had a car that was real good on those short runs and pretty good on the long runs. But I’m pretty sure we’ll be coming back here next year and I hope we’re going to be the one in Victory Lane.”

Ron Yuhas Jr. and Donny Lia brought home the top five with Rowan Pennink, Eric Beers, Keith Rocco, polesitter Ted Christopher and Jon McKennedy the rest of the top 10.

The fourth-place effort marked the second career top-five finish for Yuhas, and the first since his third-place run at Thompson International Speedway in 2007, a span of 19 starts.

Defending Whelen Modified Tour Champion Ron Silk finished 11th, his first finish outside the top five this season.

With the victory, Coby extended his lead on Silk in the season standings to 20. With his third podium finish in five outings, Preece sits third in points, 23 out.

Coby, who had two wins in 116 starts across 10 seasons, became the third driver in the last six years to win three times in five races on the schedule. The last two drivers to accomplish that feat – Donny Lia in 2007 and Bobby Santos in 2010 – both went on to capture that season’s title.

The first Whelen Modified Tour event at Waterford since 2006, and the 18th overall at the facility, saw three lead changes and just four caution periods. Coby became the 14th different Whelen Modified Tour winner in the .375-mile oval’s history.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to action with the Town Fair Tire 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 14.
