SILK BEGINS TITLE DEFENSE IN VICTORY LANE
Wins Wild Icebreaker To Kick Off Whelen Modified Season

Ron Silk started the 2012 campaign where he ended 2011 in celebration at Thompson International Speedway, but it wasn’t without controversy.

The Norwalk, Conn., earned his eighth career win Sunday afternoon as he opened defense of his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title in the traditional season-opener, The Icebreaker. He finished just inches ahead of Ted Christopher at the culmination of a third green-white-checkered attempt.

Rowan Pennink crossed the line in front of both but had been posted by NASCAR officials on the previous lap for jumping the race’s final restart.

As a result, it was Silk not Pennink driving into Victory Lane – where Silk had raised the tour championship trophy last October. Pennink was credited with a 10th-place finish.

Mike Stefanik finished third, followed by Jimmy Blewett and Donny Lia. Ryan Preece earned the Coors Light Pole Award in Saturday qualifying but was caught up in a Lap 123 melee and finished 16th.

Jamie Tomaino finished sixth, followed by Patrick Emerling, Doug Coby, Wade Cole and Pennink.

Silk became the first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver to earn a protected spot in the starting lineup for the UNOH Battle At The Beach, to be held on a temporary oval on the backstretch of Daytona International Speedway during Speedweeks 2013 next February.

The next NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event is the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.
