PREECE RECORDS THOMPSON ICEBREAKER POLE
Sets Track Qualifying Record In Sixth Career Pole Run
Ryan Preece’s record run Saturday at Thompson International Speedway earned his sixth career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Coors Light Pole Award in advance of Sunday’s season-opening Icebreaker.

Preece, from Berlin, Conn., posted a lap of 18.387 seconds (122.369 mph) to break Bobby Santos’ previous mark of 18.418 (122.163) set in this event last year. Saturday’s top qualifying effort also marked the third Whelen Modified Tour race in a row at Thompson that has seen Preece grab the top starting spot. He earned poles at the .625-mile oval in the September and October events in 2011. (NASCAR Statement: This reference was based on the 2010 record time of 18.414, but Bobby Santos set the record of 18.237 in the 2011 Icebreaker. That mark still stands, and it is correctly listed as the track record in the 2012 media guide.)

Justin Bonsignore also went under Santos’ previous mark. Fastest in practice earlier on Saturday, the third-year driver from Holtsville, N.Y., posted a fast lap of 18.402 (122.269).

Both of Sunday’s front row starters will be vying for their first career Whelen Modified Tour Thompson victory.

Santos laid down the third-fastest lap of Saturday qualifying at 18.545 (121.327). Keith Rocco (18.560/121.228) and Rowan Pennink (18.594/121.007) brought home the top-five qualifiers on Saturday.

Ron Yuhas Jr., Mike Stefanik, defending Whelen Modified Tour Champion Ron Silk, Todd Szegedy and Donny Lia rounded out the top 10 qualifiers for Sunday’s event.

Racing action will begin at Thompson on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., with NASCAR Whelen All-American Series features. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s 150-lap season-opener is set for approximately 3 p.m.
