The 2012 VMRS race season started with Jon McKennedy behind the wheel of an
Art Barry modified. At their first race, McKennedy brought the SPAFCO
sponsored #2 to victory lane at Waterford Speedbowl. It was a great start
and a perfect beginning for the new team.
The team went forward and won two more VMRS races in 2012 and had eight
additional top five finishes. The accomplishments of the team have certainly
shown that the combination of the legendary Barry race team with the talents
of McKennedy was definitely a move in the right direction.
McKennedy returned to Lee USA for the last race knowing he had to finish
fifteenth or better to capture the 2012 VMRS Championship. McKennedy had cut
his teeth in racing at Lee, so he knows the track and what he needs to do to
win.
In the end he did not win, but completing in a fourth place finish was
enough to guarantee McKennedy not only this year’s championship but also his
third with the series.
McKennedy was all smiles as the #2 team celebrated their first championship
together as a team. “The #2 team is really awesome. Art Barry is a class act
guy as well as the rest of the team. When he called me to drive his car it
was a no brainer. I wanted to do it. I am glad I could drive his car and win
him a championship. He has had a lot of great drivers drive for him. Driving
his car and winning a championship means a lot.”
Veteran Car owner, Art Barry, turned the wrenches for his first VMRS
Championship. With his driver, family and crew behind him Barry led the team
to the series championship. “It is almost priceless. No it is priceless! “,
Art Barry said about the team’s first series championship. “To win the two
national titles on the NASCAR series and to have Jon win this here is just
incredible. He is just one good driver. He is great. We started out no
knowing what we were going to do and it worked so good. The chemistry was
just perfect and I am really proud of him. It is an honor to win this
championship. I have not talked to Jon too much but I would like to come
back and defend this title. And if it is possible I will defend the title.”
The #2 team will come together on December 8th at the VMRS banquet. There
Jon McKennedy will be crowned the 2012 champion and Barry honored as
Championship Car Owner that not only turned the wrenches but also gave
McKennedy a chance to reach the top with his team.
Race Notes from Lee USA Oktoberfest:
What does the 2012 VMRS Championship mean to
you?
Jon McKennedy
.”A third championship with the series means a lot. Each year the series
competition has been getting tougher and tougher. There are better cars and
the competition is much higher, so three championships in the last four
years is pretty cool.” |
