What an awesome weekend. I know there wasn’t any racing up in the Northeast
but that didn’t stop it from being one of the greatest weekends of our
lives. Lynda and I became Grandparents at 3:26 Saturday morning. God has
blessed us with a young life to love and nurture. Greetings in the name of
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I have made the early morning trip many times, heading West on I-84
as a new day dawns. Usually the reason is a race or appearance somewhere,
but this early morning trip was because of the greatest gift of all, life.
As the world around us slept a new life entered this world, Madeline Ann
Verrastro, our Granddaughter, a blessing from God.
As I held her in my arms for the first time I thought of the
promise this new life holds; the things that she can do, the things that she
can change, the things that God has ordained for her. I thought of the steps
she would walk and how God has laid those out before her.
Psalm 139:13-16;
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
My
attention then turned to Lynda and I, the role we would have in nurturing,
encouraging and loving this tender life. This life has been entrusted to us
to help grow. What an overwhelming responsibility. We are thankful to have
God by our side to guide us and help us become the grandparents we need to
be.
As I drove back and forth to the hospital over the past few days my
thoughts turned to trust. Here was this life, this baby, entrusted to this
family. I thought about the level of trust we place in others.
When we race we place a tremendous level of trust in the other
competitors. We trust those who work on the car, making sure everything is
right and safe. We trust the officials to make sure the race is run in a
safe and fair manner. It wouldn’t be out of line to say we trust our very
lives to those we race with.
To a greater extent this life has been entrusted to us. We have
been given the means to love this child, to teach this child, to encourage
this child to be all that God has for her. I am reminded of that passage in
Proverbs;
Proverbs 22:6, Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is
old he will not turn from it.
As I
look at the world around us, the strife, the difficulties, the natural
disasters and the challenges that the future holds, I see the promise of God
to give us hope and a future and I know this life can bring hope to the
world.
From the Hymn Because He Lives;
How sweet to hold a
newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy she gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.
Such
comforting words in the days we face ahead of us. Such promise a new life
holds. Join with Lynda and I, our daughter Elisabeth and husband Joey and
our granddaughter Maddy as we celebrate the pride and joy this life will
bring to those whose lives she touches.
God is Good! All the Time!
THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD
SOUTHERN MODS GET THINGS STARTED - The Whelen Southern
Modified Tour was in action over the weekend at Caraway with a full field.
The grid was dotted with a few Northern cars who escaped the melting snow to
make the trip down. When the dust settled George Brunnhoelzl III took the
lead and won in his return to running the Southern Tour full time. I talked
with George in the off season and he will be making a few appearances up
North but thought it would be best to concentrate his efforts running for
the Southern Title again, he was the Champion in 2009. His season is off to
a flying start.
IRON SHARPENS IRON - This Saturday in Hartford,
Connecticut Racing with Jesus Ministries will participate in a men’s
conference at First Cathedral. This celebration helps encourage men to stand
up for what is right in the eyes of God. It teaches them to hold each other
accountable to God’s moral standard. Most importantly it lets us each know
we are not alone in our struggles. The encouragement it provides is a
tremendous help to each of us as we lead our families through a world of
challenges.
We expect about 3,000 men to participate and hope to get the word
out about the vital ministry we provide. Our hope is that God would call
some in attendance to join with us as we minister at the track. Also, that
God would place on some of their hearts a burden for what we do and that
they would come along side us and support what we do.
If you want to learn more about Iron Sharpens Iron check out their

We are looking forward to getting out and taking in some racing
action soon, the snow is almost gone, the water is receding, the tracks are
drying out, practice will start soon and before you know it those familiar
words will ring out;
Drivers, Start Your Engines!.
