With
the 2016 race season opening in Florida with
SpeedWeeks, Bronson Speedway made the decision to
add the tour type modifieds to their Saturday night
race schedule. With $2000 on the line for the win
and a guaranteed Richie Evans 100 starting position
at New Smyrna Speedway five NASCAR type modifieds
made the trip to Bronson all looking for the
victory. This was the first ever modified race at
the 3/8ths high banked track.
After
practice and qualifying drivers expressed their
surprise on the uniqueness of the tracks
configuration and challenges. All of them were up
for ready to out and apply their strategies in the
feature event, all hoping to claim the purse. The 50
lap feature event counted cautions so teams pulled
together their plan and were ready to run for the
money.
The track is abrasive surface which during Friday’s
testing on showed major tire wear. So drivers knew
they had to use their judgment and save some rubber
for race end and the victory challenge. And Ryan
Preece of Berlin, CT. was ready for the challenge.
He started on the pole and held the lead position
for all 50 laps. He held off moves from Jeremy
Gerstner and Ron Silk to maintain the top position
and to come across the finish to take the checkered
flag.
“I
want to thank them for having us (tour type
modifieds) out here,” one happy Preece explained in
victory lane. “It is always cool to come to a new
track and this place is really pretty neat. “This
place is definitely interesting. I like it. I hope
that they do this again and I hope that they get
more cars because I think that this place would be a
pretty racy track with fifteen to twenty modifieds
on it. It was neat to be here and take on a new
track. We kind of knew from yesterday in practice
that you were going to get about ten solids laps out
of these tires. Just because these tires are so soft
and this track is so abrasive. So we knew what we
had to deal with. We knew we had to try to make them
last as long as we could. I am very happy and the
car is very good.”
So with one victory to his credit, Preece will now
onward to New Smyrna Speedway with the Eddie
Partridge owned #6 Modified for five nights of tour
type modified racing. “We are going to go to New
Smyrna tomorrow for the rest of the week and then it
is on to Daytona. We are going over to Daytona on
Friday with JD Motorsports for the Xfinity Series
for the start of the division’s race season.”
We would like to thank Ann Young and the staff of
Bronson Speedway for their hospitality and their
support of modified racing. Bronson Speedway is a
neat track and definitely one that needs to be added
to one’s bucket list.
